Description

Fixes navbar overflow and clipping on small screen resolutions where navigation items and buttons extend beyond the viewport.

Closes #312

Changes

  • Changed breakpoint from min-[1115px] to lg (1024px)
  • Added progressive responsive scaling with xl and 2xl breakpoints
  • Implemented tighter spacing and smaller text sizes at lower breakpoints
  • Added flex-shrink-0 to icons to prevent squishing
  • Made logo clickable
  • Added client-side mounting check

Testing

Tested on resolutions from 375px to 1920px+:

  • Mobile/Tablet (< 1024px): Hamburger menu
  • Small Desktop (1024px - 1279px): All items visible with compact spacing
  • Standard Desktop (1280px+): Comfortable spacing

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds a mount guard and defers initial render, replaces full-hide logic with opacity+pointer-events transitions, restructures logo/linking, tightens responsive sizing and hit areas, and refines mobile dropdown sizing and typography to prevent small-screen overflow.

Changes

Cohort / File(s) Summary
Navbar component
apps/web/src/components/landing-sections/navbar.tsx
Added isMounted mount guard and useEffect; early return until mounted. Replaced display-based hide with opacity + pointer-events controlled by showNavbar. Adjusted container width/max-width behavior for pricing vs non-pricing pages. Wrapped logo/brand in Link and preserved whitespace rules. Updated responsive visibility (hidden lg:flex), sizing, paddings, gaps, and icon/button sizes (mobile toggle, Contribute/Get Started). Enhanced mobile dropdown with max-height, overflow handling, shadow, and refined item text sizes and transitions. Minor class-name and layout tweaks across header elements.

133-164: Use consistent breakpoint for mobile menu visibility.

Line 138 still uses min-[1115px]:hidden while the rest of the component has been updated to use the lg breakpoint (1024px). This inconsistency means the mobile menu will hide at a different breakpoint (1115px) than when the desktop navigation shows (1024px), potentially causing both or neither to display in the 1024-1114px range.

🔎 Proposed fix
-          className="absolute top-full mt-2 left-0 w-full bg-neutral-900/90 backdrop-blur-xl border border-white/10 min-[1115px]:hidden flex flex-col items-center py-5 space-y-4 z-50 rounded-3xl"

Note: You should also update the "Contribute" button visibility on line 117 from min-[1115px]:flex to lg:flex for full consistency:

-          className="hidden min-[1115px]:flex items-center gap-2 px-4 py-2.5 bg-github-bg hover:bg-github-hover transition-colors rounded-lg border border-github-border text-white"

Learning: In Next.js apps, avoid using redirect() from next/navigation inside Client Components during render. It should not be used in event handlers like onClick or onSubmit; for those cases, use useRouter().push() or router.replace() instead. This guidance applies to TSX files (React components) across the codebase; implement in client components to handle conditional redirects during render, and use router-based navigation in handlers.

🔇 Additional comments (4)
apps/web/src/components/landing-sections/navbar.tsx (4)

70-70: LGTM! Fluid width calculation prevents overflow.

The shift from fixed responsive widths to calc(100%-2rem) with progressive breakpoints ensures the navbar adapts smoothly across screen sizes while maintaining proper margins.

74-81: LGTM! Proper touch target sizing and accessibility.

The min-h-[44px] and min-w-[44px] ensure WCAG 2.1 AA compliance for touch targets, and the reduced icon size (24px) improves spacing on smaller screens.

82-92: LGTM! Clickable logo follows UX best practices.

Wrapping the brand in a Link to the homepage is a standard navigation pattern. The whitespace-nowrap on the label prevents awkward text wrapping at intermediate breakpoints.

94-110: LGTM! Progressive spacing and sizing improve responsiveness.

The simplified visibility rule (hidden lg:flex) and progressive gap/text sizing ensure navigation items fit comfortably across all supported breakpoints without overflow.

2-2: Inconsistent useEffect usage.

useEffect is imported on line 2, but line 38 uses React.useEffect. Use the imported useEffect directly for consistency.

🔎 Proposed fix
-  React.useEffect(() => {
+  useEffect(() => {

Also applies to: 38-38

16-16: Simplify boolean initialization.

The ternary isPricingPage ? true : false is redundant since isPricingPage is already a boolean.

🔎 Proposed fix
-  const [showNavbar, setShowNavbar] = useState(isPricingPage ? true : false);
+  const [showNavbar, setShowNavbar] = useState(isPricingPage);

66-68: Mount guard looks good for hydration safety.

This pattern prevents hydration mismatches when initial state depends on client-only values. The brief flash before mount is acceptable for this use case.

73-82: Good responsive layout and animation improvements.

The pointerEvents toggle in the animation prevents interaction when hidden. The progressive responsive widths (lg:w-[90%] xl:w-[85%] 2xl:w-[80%]) should address the overflow issue.

85-104: Well-implemented brand section with accessibility.

The clickable logo wrapped in Link, proper touch target sizing (min-h-[44px] min-w-[44px]), and flex-shrink-0 on the logo container are good improvements. Accessibility attributes on the menu toggle are appropriate.

123-143: Action buttons section looks correct.

The gap class syntax is now correct (gap-2), and design tokens are properly used for the GitHub button styling. The flex-shrink-0 on icons prevents unwanted compression at smaller widths.

145-176: Mobile dropdown handles overflow and accessibility well.

Good implementation with max-h-[80vh] overflow-y-auto for scroll handling on smaller screens and proper close-on-click behavior. The Escape key handler (lines 38-48) complements this for keyboard navigation.

@coderabbitai The text-tertiary token is not defined in our project's design system. Using text-[#d1d1d1] maintains consistency with the existing navbar styling. This can be refactored later when design tokens are implemented.

@nsvoriginals, I've checked the design system files and found that text-tertiary is actually defined in your project's design system:

In apps/web/src/lib/design-tokens.ts:

text: {
  primary: "#ffffff",
  secondary: "#e1e1e1",
  tertiary: "#d1d1d1", // ← This is defined
  muted: "#a1a1a1",
  light: "#363636",
},

And it's properly configured in apps/web/tailwind.config.ts:

text: {
  primary: colors.text.primary,
  secondary: colors.text.secondary,
  tertiary: colors.text.tertiary, // ← Available as Tailwind class
  muted: colors.text.muted,
  light: colors.text.light,
},

The text-tertiary token maps to exactly #d1d1d1 - the same value you're using. You can replace text-[#d1d1d1] with text-text-tertiary on Line 106 to follow the established design token system.

This maintains consistency with your project's coding guidelines which emphasize always using design tokens instead of hardcoded hex values.
