In addition to performing complex image manipulation operations, PIL/Pillow also allows for simple image manipulation operations - opening and then saving in a different format, pasting one image onto another, cropping, rotating. It lets Python developers automate the kind of tasks that would be very cumbersome to do in a UI-based image editor.
