What is the reasoning behind this? Seems like whatever build system is used for the docs could build a table based on the codebase (or an upstream codebase). Maybe I'm missing something, would love to contribute if needed.

Please enlighten me how https://www.mkdocs.org/ can scan arbitrary bash code, identify external variables, their defaults, extract descriptions and render that into a table?

#2137 is the placeholder for the custom tool that I thought would be needed, but maybe you know of an existing way to do this?
