Possible bug in A-Law codec detection in WAV files #2384

@francesigo

Description

@francesigo

I’m analyzing a WAV file encoded as A-Law PCM (G.711, Codec ID 6). MediaInfo (25.07) reports it as:

Format: ADPCM
Format profile: A-Law
Codec ID: 6
Codec ID/Hint: CCITT

After examining the fmt header, it is clear that wFormatTag = 6 (A-Law PCM, mono, 8-bit, 8000 Hz), so it is not ADPCM.

It seems the issue is in the GUI/CLI classification showing “ADPCM / Format profile: A-Law”. Attached is an excerpt of the hex header of the file for reference:

52 49 46 46 12 FD 04 00 57 41 56 45 66 6D 74 20 12 00 00 00 06 00 01 00 40 1F 00 00 40 1F 00 00 01 00 08 00 00 00 66 61 63 74 04 00 00 00 E0 FC 04 00 64 61 74 61

Expected behavior: MediaInfo should correctly identify the format as A-Law PCM (G.711), not ADPCM.

Thank you,

Francesco Sigona
